The sad passing of ‘The King Denis Law’ brought back a painful memory of him from about 30 years ago.
I was doing a picture of him kicking off the new season for the Manchester Wednesday FL.
He lined up in front of the players, all showing off the new style of shorts introduced at that time, to kick off the season.
He had a broad smile as he struck the ball as sweetly as ever and with great accuracy it came under my camera and straight into my nuts.
Denis came over to apologise to me and said: “I have always been known for my accuracy in shooting for many years and this sums it up how precise I was to miss your camera!”

I saw Denis many times after that, mainly in golf events, and he always mentioned it with a twinkle in his eye.
Denis live in Chorlton for many years, in ‘posh’ Chorltonville, and his children went to the nursery at the church opposite the entrance to Chorlton Sports Club.
I think his daughters enjoyed playing tennis at Whalley Range CC, where a certain former L&C ref JP was a member.
He was also a social member of Northenden GC where Matt and his son Sandy were prominent members. It is believed that he never paid subs as he was from Aberdeen!
