Premier Division Sides Avoid Rhodes Cup Upset

A mixture of domestic cup games and top league action produced some exciting encounters with three games completed in the Rhodes Cup quarter finals featuring teams from the Premier Division and Division One.

Division One leaders Chadderton Cott took on the Premier Division’s exciting young team Pro United.

It was an end to end thriller which ended at 3-3 and in the penalty shoot out Pro United went through with a tense 5-4 success.

Trafford reserves also represented division one and gave a good account of themselves as they just lost out 2-1 to Premier division high-fliers Abacus Media 2-1.

The other game was all Premier division and AFC Monton kept up their recent good form with a clinical 3-0 win over Bollington United.


There were also three games in the Wray Cup for teams in divisions two and three.

Saddleworth 3Ds reached the Semi Final with a resounding victory over Santos.

Santos scored the only goal of the first half with a first minute strike from Reece Holden.

Saddleworth took the lead with two quick goals on the hour mark, slotting three more late in the game.

It was close at Rochdalians as they scored the only goal of their game hosting Old StretsGregs reserves.

It was also close in the local derby at Broadheath Central who lost out 2-1 to Timperley Villa.


In the Whitehead Cup for teams in Divisions A and B the shooting stars were Didsbury reserves with a stunning 7-1 win at Moston Brook thirds.

Salford United were also too hot to handle as they cruised to a 4-1 win over Bury Ams A.

Limited action in the Premier divisions saw Trafford United win their basement battle with Village Manchester 3-2.


Division One was also limited to one game and AFC Stockport missed the chance to close the gap on the top two as they lost out 3-2 to Elton Fold.

Just one game also in division two and that also finished at 3-2 in favour of Old StretsGregs hosting Abacus Media reserves.

The top game in Division Three saw leaders Manchester Rovers move a massive 16 points clear at the top of the table.

First-half strikes from Adekunle Otulang and Andy Murphy put Rovers in control over Sublime Athletic and a superb second-half volley from Jordan Cummings sealed a 3-9 win.

Altrincham Hale found their shooting boots in a 6-1 win over AFC Stockport Warriors and Heywood St James reserves enjoyed a 4-2 win over South Manchester.

The other game had Trafford United reserves keeping an immaculate clean sheet in a 3-0 win at Manchester Village reserves.

In Division A Waterhead increased their lead at the top of the table to five points with games in hand as they won their local derby with Fittonhill All-Stars 3-1.

AFC Oldham had a clinical 4-0 win over Irlam Steel Rangers Development.

Division B leaders Signol Athletic were without a game and AFC Stockport Titans cut their lead to six points with a 4-2 win over Saddleworth 3D reserves.

Santos U23 continued their fine end of season run with a 7-2 victory over Village Manchester 3rds.

Top scorer Jackson Fulton led the way with four goals with further strikes by Zakiullah Azizi, Oliver Bollard-Wilkes and Joe Mellor.

The spoils were shared in the other two games with Didsbury thirds and Bury B locked at 1-1 and a lively encounter at Stoconians reserves saw them share six goals with Rushford Park reserves.
